In Court: David Andres Velasquez

Who: David Andres Velasquez, 20

What: Velasquez pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges that he tried to rape his teacher at Summit Preparatory High School in Redwood City on Jan. 23.

How: Prosecutors said a knife-toting Velasquez emerged from the bushes near a school parking lot, forced the 29-year-old San Francisco woman to her car and tried to rape her. Another teacher interrupted the alleged attack by screaming at Velasquez, prosecutors said.

Reaction: Velasquez’s attorney has said his client was “overcharged” and that the incident won’t be as “serious as it sounds” when the facts come to light. San Mateo County Chief Deputy District Attorney Karen Guidotti has said prosecutors stand by the charges.

What’s next: The case is set for a jury trial on Sept. 10, with a pretrial conference scheduled for July 9.
