129 arrested in San Francisco DUI sweep

A 17-day crackdown on drinking and driving during the holiday season in The City netted more than 100 arrests, police said, and capped another year where no fatal alcohol-related deaths occurred.

The California Highway Patrol and multiple law enforcement agencies made 129 DUI arrests in San Francisco since Dec. 16, when Avoid the 8 began. One-hundred arrests were made over the same period last year.

The last time a DUI fatality occurred over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays was in 2007, according to San Francisco police Capt. Al Casciato, who founded The City’s campaign.

The San Francisco Police Department, CHP, U.S. Park Police, Alcoholic Beverage Control, San Francisco City College police and San Francisco University police participated in the crackdown.

Avoid the 8 will hit the streets and freeways again on Super Bowl Sunday and St. Patrick’s Day.
