A married couple in Sebastopol can rest easy after a DNA test of a pair of shoes left at their home during a late-night home burglary led to an arrest in San Francisco on Tuesday.

Jair Soares Hoover, 31, was taken into custody by San Francisco police in an apartment complex in the 1000 block of Market Street around 1:30 p.m., Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Mike Raasch said.

On June 12, Hoover allegedly fled a Sebastopol home with $13 in cash after a resident awoke and caught him in the act. He got away but left behind his shoes, deputies said.

“I think he took them off to creep around the house without making noise,” Raasch said.

A DNA test of the shoes implicated Hoover, who had been logged into a database following a burglary conviction in 2007, Raacsh said.

The bust wasn’t just over $13, deputies say. Authorities suspect Hoover may have broken into the same home twice in May, stealing a total of $260 cash.

Hoover’s mother lives in the neighborhood, Raasch said.

During an interview in San Francisco’s county jail, Hoover allegedly admitted to burglarizing the home twice, stealing a total of $73, Raasch said.

Hoover was to be transported to Sonoma County in the next few days to face two counts of residential burglary and a probation violation.
