A man shot himself in the foot in more ways than one in San Francisco’s Mission district early Wednesday.

Police responded to a call about a man in his 20s who had been shot in the 700 block of Shotwell Street.

The injured man cried out to cops, “My foot hurts!” but didn’t explain why, according to San Francisco police Lt. Troy Dangerfield.

That’s because the man did not want to admit that he accidentally shot himself, police said. The man has an emergency protective order against him and thus is not allowed to possess a gun, Dangerfield said. Also, a firearm found at the scene was stolen, he said.

Witnesses called 911 after hearing the gunfire around 2:50 a.m. One witness told police he saw the victim running west on Shotwell from 22nd Street and then drop to the ground.

“I’ve been shot!” the man cried.

But when police arrived, the man didn’t immediately tell police he was shot. After complaining about the pain in his foot, the man “refused to provide further details,” Dangerfield said.

When medics came to help, they found evidence he shot himself, Dangerfield said.

“Live ammunition fell from his clothing,” the police spokesman said.

The gun was found on the hood of a nearby car, police said.

The man was transported to San Francisco General Hospital. His wound was not life threatening, police said.

As of Wednesday morning, the man had not been arrested since police were still investigating the circumstances of the shooting, Dangerfield said.
