A gunman opened fire in a South of Market alleyway early this morning, wounding two men before fleeing, San Francisco police said.

Officers were called to the 400 block of Minna Street, between Fifth and Sixth streets, at 2:13 a.m.

The suspect, a man in his 20s, approached a man in his 40s walking in the area and shot him multiple times in the upper and lower body, police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said. One of the bullets is believed to have ricocheted and struck a bystander, a man in his mid-20s, in the upper body, he said.

Both victims were hospitalized and expected to survive, Esparza said.
