Peninsula burglar blinded by pepper-spray-toting mom

UPDATED 9:50 a.m.

A Peninsula mom used pepper spray to scare off a burglar from her home Thursday afternoon.

The mother was with her young daughter when she found the burglar in her bedroom closet around 2:50 p.m. The home was in the 3500 block of Bay Road in unincorporated Redwood City, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office said.

After he was found, the thief ran out of the closet and was met with the mom's pepper-spray. The blinded burglar managed to crawl out a window and hop over a backyard fence.

A neighbor noticed a suspicious person in his yard and called 911. He told cops the suspect was holding his face.

Responding police found the intruder hiding under a tarp in the carport of the neighbor's home, sheriff's deputies said.

Edgar Aguiniga, 30, of East Palo Alto, arrested for burglary, possession of methamphetamine, and for a previous warrant for violating probation, sheriff's deputies said.
