Synthetic turf on its way to Minnie and Lovie Recreation Center

The muddy and uneven grass fields near the Minnie and Lovie Recreation Center in Oceanside will be the ninth ones in The City to get a synthetic replacement.

Park officials are proposing a $7 million project through its partnership with City Fields Foundation to retain the two existing baseball diamonds and soccer field and add a new full-sized soccer field. They estimate it will add 5,365 hours of play time.

The announcement was made through a press release that showed support from Supervisor John Avalos, Mayor Ed Lee and Recreation and Park General Manager Phil Ginsburg, and Assemblywoman Fiona Ma.

“This is more

than just a renovation of Minnie and Lovie’s athletic field; it’s an investment in our community,” Ma said in a press release.

Laying a blanket of polyethylene and covering it with plastic grass blades, webbed by recycled tire has stirred debate over long-term effects on athletes and the environment, but recent, preliminary tests have not found problems.

Meanwhile, the environmental review for the Beach Chalet Soccer Fields is still pending, and construction at the Mission Playground is scheduled to begin later this year.
