The City did not set aside part of $22 million to remedy 5 to 10 contaminated acres of open spaces in the Bayview and India Basin along a potential 13-mile waterfront trail, but the feds and a nonprofit did.

The planned 13-mile stretch along the waterfront from China Basin to southern county is called the Blue Greenway — the southeast, developing portion of a 500-mile fluid path for bicyclists and hikers across 47 cities in the nine-county Bay Area.

And $22 million was set aside from a 2008 neighborhood parks bond to help connect the more than 30 open spaces the Blue Greenway will intercede.

However, nonprofit Neighborhood Parks Council recognized the abandoned gap that continues to have negative health and safety impacts for adjacent low-income neighborhoods.

So it applied for $175,000 through a new U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Brownfields Area-Wide pilot program that awarded 23 communities across the nation the same amount.

Bayview and India Basin were the only ones areas in the Bay Area that received funding.
