Elementary school to receive new mural

A new mosaic will soon greet the students walking in to Jose Ortega Elementary School in the Oceanview neighborhood.

After much hard work and perseverance, the parent-teacher association at the school was able to secure a $10,000 Community Challenge Grant.

Twenty-eight organizations receicved a piece of the $577,000 grant pool to improve community spaces.

The original mosaic – a mural that wrapped around the front of the school – was damaged. Work will begin on the replacement in February.

It will have a rain forest theme and will be designed and assembled with help from both parents and community volunteers, including representatives of the OMI Family Resource Center, the Stonestown YMCA, Temple United Methodist Church, and other local organizations, according to school officials.

Local artist Josef Norris will over see the project. Norris finished a similar mural at Sunnyside Elementary School last year.
