For the first time this year, the Associated Press-GfK poll has President Obama’s re-elect number below 50%. But by a one point margin, 48-47, the poll has a plurality of Americans still sending him back to Washington.
Despite a 52-47 net approval rating approval, a majority of Americans disapprove of Obama’s handling on most domestic issues. 59% of Americans disapprove of Obama on the economy, 63% on the budget deficit, 59% on unemployment, 63% on gas prices, and 54% on health care. Overall 63% of Americans told the AP they thought the country was going the wrong direction.
There was some positive news for Obama heading into tonight’s Afghanistan speech though. Obama is still strong on foreign policy issues. 63% approve of his handling of terrorism, 59% approve of his relationships with other countries, and 52% approve of his handling of Afghanistan.
