Fifty-four percent of Americans do not approve of using Title X family planning funds for abortions, and 43 percent “strongly” oppose giving any federal funds to abortion providers like Planned Parenthood, according to a nationwide survey conducted between April 7 – 10th.
“Even 26 percent of pro-choice adherents rejected diverting taxpayer dollars for family planning organizations that provide abortions,” reported Kellyanne Conway, president and CEO of the polling company, inc./Woman Trend.
Opposition to spending Title X funds on abortion was consistent in key demographic subgroups, including:
- Women (51 percent oppose, versus 40 percent support);
- Men (56 -39%);
- Self-identified Republicans (77-20%)
- Self-identified Independent voters (52 -36 %);
- Non-Hispanic whites (53-42%);
- Blacks (62-26 %);
- Hispanics (47 -45 %); and
- Young Americans between the ages of 18 and 34 (54 -38%).
In fact, the poll found majority opposition to abortion funding in all age groups except 35-to 44-year-olds (48 percent support, versus 40 percent opposed).
“President Obama and congressional Democrats who fought to preserve funding for their political ally, Planned Parenthood, have snubbed the majority of Americans, both pro-life and pro-choice, who don’t want their money going to America’s largest abortion provider,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List, which commissioned the poll.
“Our findings are consistent with the 61 percent opposition to ‘using public funds for abortions when the woman cannot afford it’ found in the latest CNN/Opinion Research poll” released Monday, Conway said.
Dannenfelser’s group points out that Planned Parenthood has $1 billion in net assets and has raked in more than $500 million in profits over the last nine years, thanks to an 80 percent increase in taxpayer funding. With this kind of broad public opposition to federal funding of abortions, if Congress can’t defund Planned Parenthood, it can’t defund anything.
