Sorry, but James Morrison just happens to have the same name, folks.

But he hails from Britain, where, granted, he’s been making much larger inroads since his Top 5 debut single “You Give Me Something” back in 2006. But with his upcoming third set, “The Awakening,” out Oct. 11 on Universal Republic in the States (naturally, it’s already debut at No. 1 overseas) he’s setting his sights on America. And it’s long past time for us to heed the call.

Morrison’s strength is a battered rasp of an old-school soul singing voice, every bit as smooth and evocative as the late Sam Cooke’s.

It took him three pensive years to arrive at “The Awakening,” and serious R&B musings like “One Life,” “In My Dreams” and “Person I Should’ve Been,” during which time his father passed away after a long battle with alcoholism and depression, and he himself also became a father.

The disc even features a Gospel-optimistic duet with Jessie J called “Up.”
