Berkeley’s own Grammy-winning fiddler Laurie Lewis has come to a conclusion after roughly 35 years in the bluegrass business.

“I realize, looking back, that my one way as a musician and songwriter and my whole approach to making music were influenced in various ways by what I found in Bill Monroe’s music,” she says.

Ergo, her new album — out this week — was pretty much a no-brainer: “Skippin’ And Flyin’” — a heartfelt tribute to the legendary father of bluegrass himself.

The record features Monroe classics, but also rustic Monroe-styled standards from Jimmie Rodgers, Maybelle Carter, Flatt & Scruggs and newer artists like Del McCoury.

Along with her longtime mandolin/mandola player Tom Rozum, “Skippin’” also boasts a classy cameo from none other than Linda Ronstadt.

Lewis has something secial planned for her hometown, too — an official record release show Nov. 26 at Berkeley’s intimate Freight And Salvage.
