Enigmatic Mona to play Popscene this week

You might mistake the moniker for an acronym, like Museum Of Nebraska Art. But no, the little Nashville band called Mona (that’s making big waves overseas) is nothing so highbrow. But they’re certainly enigmatic.

The pompadoured foursome dress like Sun Session time travelers, but they write chiming, panoramic anthems like “Trouble On The Way,” which they’re also offering for free in a piano version on their website, if you sign up for their mailing list. But most of their postings will probably be datestamped from Britain — Mona has an English manager, and just won MTV UK’s “Brand New For 2011” contest.

In fact, as soon as they play Aaron Axelsen’s Popscene (at the Rickshaw Stop) on Thursday, the band heads right back across the Atlantic for a tour of England, Ireland and Scotland. And they’re a perfect match for the UK, thanks to the Liam Gallagher-haughty pronouncements of frontman Nick Brown, who’s already proclaimed that he’ll be bigger than Bono one day.

As weird as it would be to see a macho rock band dubbed Mona resting at Billboard’s No. 1 position, the guy could be right. Once their debut disc hits this summer, it just might happen.
