Prominent defense attorney Bill Fazio filed papers at 10:41 a.m. Tuesday morning in the Department of Elections to run for San Francisco district attorney.

Fazio said it’s the right time for him to run since “not one of [the other candidates’] has ever stepped into a San Francisco court room.” Fazio said The City’s top prosecutor post is more than just about being a good manager. But should be filled by someone with court room experience, which goes a long way to bring “inspiration to their troops.”

“I have been both a prosecutor and a defense attorney,” Fazio said.

It’s not the first time Fazio has attempted to run for the position, he has three times before. “The fourth time is like the first time,” he said.

Fazio will go up against incumbent District Attorney George Gascón, who was appointed by then-Mayor Gavin Newsom while he was serving as the police chief. Other contenders in the race include former Police Commissioner David Onek, Alameda County Assistant District Attorney Sharmin Bock and former Orange County public defender Vu Trinh.
