Benefit event helps foster kids

Sally Hamlin Coates, the executive director of the San Francisco Court Appointed Special Advocate program, talks about a benefit event to help The City’s neglected foster children Oct. 14.

How many neglected foster children live in San Francisco? There are approximately 1,300 kids in foster care today in San Francisco. The biggest reason most are in foster care is because of neglect.
 
What are the consequences of being a neglected foster child? For the majority of kids at the age of 18 right now, approximately 50 percent will be homeless. Most are not prepared to live on their own, they lose access to social services, and they really have no way of taking care of themselves. 

What does that mean for society? About 70 percent of the incarcerated people in San Quentin were in the foster care system.

What can attendees expect from this year’s event? Well, we have a Cuban theme. It will be a pretty live and festive event.

How successful was last year’s event in terms of fundraising and what those contributions paid for? In our first year last year, we made twice as much as we thought we were going to.
