The hippest footwear fad of the past few years is band-licensed sneakers, usually for Vans and Converse. And who wouldn’t wanna own a rockin’ pair of AC/DC or Metallica Chuck Taylors, truthfully?
Well, now comes a new twist: Limited-edition Beastie Boys Converse, canvas high-tops specially designed by photographer Sunny Bak, and available only on eBay for $200. And to fans of this ribald trio, they’re worth every last penny.
The shoes feature never-before-published photos of the Beasties, taken on their groundbreaking “Licensed To Ill” tour way back in 1986.
The right one is a shot of MCA climbing the Paladium marquee. The left shoe boasts Mike D and Adrock clutching a bottle of Mad Dog in a drive-thru liquor barn somewhere in the Midwest.
Both tongues are embossed with Bak’s signature, and 10 percent of the proceeds will go to Prop 8 Films, a production company concerned with creating socially conscious documentaries, worldwide (the first is an upcoming movie about Proposition 8 and same-sex marriage).
Prints of the iconic pictures are also available through Hold Up Art, a gallery in Los Angeles (358 E. 2nd St.) that’s putting on a Bak exhibit from Oct. 8 (with an opening night reception from 7 to 11 p.m.) through Nov. 1.
