Occupation: Outreach specialist
Residence: North Beach
What he does: Lê is as an outreach specialist for Network For Elders, a San Francisco-based advocacy group that organizes seniors and encourages community bonds. Before joining Network For Elders, Lê worked for the Senior Action Network as the director of Senior University, a citywide educational training session for seniors. The basis of SU was to instill seniors with political lobbying and community gathering skills.
Why he does it: “Seniors in this city, especially ones in low-income neighborhoods, are constantly overlooked,” Lê said. Seniors have proven time and time again that when they organize, they can be a powerful force for change.”
The impact: While working at the Senior Action Network, Lê helped stage a successful rally in July 2006 against FoodsCo, a grocery store in the Bayview district that was selling spoiled food. Lê’s disciples are also getting into the action. Gail Smith, a former student at SU, is helping lead a campaign to clean up toxic waste at Midway Village in Daly City.
