Transit officials cut the ribbon Tuesday morning on a canopy that was recently completed at the Powell Street BART Station entrance in San Francisco.

The canopies are part of a pilot program and more are on their way, according to BART officials. The ceremony started at 11 a.m. on the north side of Market and Ellis streets.

At least two canopies are being constructed at BART stations along Market Street. One is located at the Powell Street station while the other is at the Civic Center station at Market and Seventh streets.

The pilot program is meant to protect new escalators that are being installed, as well as provide an added layer of security and cleanliness because gates on the canopies can be locked at street level.

Other Bay Area BART stations such as the 19th Street Station in Oakland and the Downtown Berkeley BART Station have received new canopies.
