UPDATE: Police arrest man linked to two unprovoked attacks on BART trains

A 42-year-old man who allegedly attacked two people in separate unprovoked attacks on BART trains in the past week has been arrested, according to the transit agency.

Mario Christopher Washington, 42, of Berkeley, was arrested Monday in Oakland after a BART media briefing, during which the agency released images of him that were taken by surveillance cameras on trains.

The first attack was reported around 7:30 p.m. Thursday, when a male victim was seated on a train at the Bay Fair station, and the suspect hit him in the head with a metal object, according to BART police.

The suspect also punched and kicked the victim, who fled from the train and ran out of the station, police said. He was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries that are not life-threatening.

Then around 7:30 p.m. Saturday, the same suspect was on a San Francisco-bound train approaching the Embarcadero station. He approached a man on the train and allegedly struck him twice in the face with a closed fist, then fled, according to police.
The victim was treated at the scene for injuries from the attack.

BART officials in late June finished installing cameras on all 669 of its train cars after it was revealed in January 2016, following a fatal shooting on a train at the West Oakland station, that many cameras on the trains were decoys.
