Only idiocy fueled this bank heist, according to prosecutors.

An unprepared bandit who fled a Burlingame bank with nearly $5,000 in cash Monday was busted a half-hour later in South San Francisco, where he reportedly ran out of gas in his getaway car.

Michael Wayne Brady, 61, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to the charge that he robbed a Wells Fargo branch at 1145 Broadway about 11:45 a.m.

Brady handed the teller a note that demanded large bills and stated he had a gun, prosecutors said.

“The teller handed over $4,740 which included bait money and a tracker,” San Mateo County Chief Deputy District Attorney Karen Guidotti said.

Though Brady escaped, Guidotti said, he was caught “about 30 minutes later in South San Francisco where his vehicle had run out of gas.”

The cash was found in Brady's car, police said, and a bank teller subsequently identified him as the bandit.
