Get out of Australia, Johnny Depp — or the doggies get it. Threatening to kill a movie star’s Yorkshire terriers isn’t exactly down-under hospitality —though when that movie star is in your country filming the umpteenth “Pirates of the Caribbean” sequel, it’s understandable — but the Agriculture Department is serious about animal quarantines. Deadly serious.
On Thursday, Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce accused Depp of violating quarantine laws by smuggling in his dogs Pistol and Boo aboard his private jet last month, according to The Associated Press.
“If you start letting movie stars — even though they’ve been the sexiest man alive twice — to come into our nation [with pets], then why don’t we just break laws for everybody?” Joyce said. “Mr. Depp has to either take his dogs back to California or we’re going to have to euthanize them.”
As the story gained traction on social media under the hashtag #WarOnTerrier, even the Australian Parliament got involved. The opposition Labor Party questioned whether budget cuts were to blame for the bio-security lapse, with one member accusing Joyce of “bashing up on poor old Boo Boo and Pistol.”
Australia’s isolated ecosystem is notoriously fragile, with imported bunnies and cane toads ending up as crop-obliterating plagues on the order of locusts and festering boils.
Joyce said his department would be responsible for putting the dogs down if they do not leave Australia.
“After that, I don’t expect to be invited to the opening of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean,’” he said. If only.
