Beggar becomes chooser with rusty gun

He gives beggars citywide a bad name. A thankless thug who asked for spare change at a Bayview gas station on Wednesday robbed a 69-year-old man who had agreed to give him money, police said. The lout asked for cash as the victim got out of his car to pump gas at Third Street and Evans Avenue about 8:40 p.m. “The victim agreed and pulled a $100 bill from his wallet to pay for the gas,” according to Bayview police. The thug reportedly snatched the bill and pulled out a rusty handgun. He fled south on Phelps Street. Read More

Group arrested in SFSU scuffle connected with squatters evicted from church

A group involved in a scuffle with San Francisco State University police Thursday night was part of a squatter's collective that was evicted from an abandoned church in the city earlier this week, according to a statement from a member of the group. An SFSU police officer was injured and several people were arrested in the confrontation Thursday night when police sought to remove alleged trespassers from a dormitory, according to a university spokeswoman. Man admits to killing S.F. woman

A man has pleaded guilty to killing a woman from San Francisco in Antigua as she made a stopover in the Caribbean island for her sister’s wedding. Tishara Daniel made no statement as he entered his plea Wednesday to a charge of murder in the death of 29-year-old Nina Nilssen. The director of public prosecutions in St. John’s has not said what sentence he will seek when the 27-year-old Daniel is sentenced, which is expected to happen July 5. Read More

Ex-psychiatrist William Ayres pleads no contest to charges of molesting boys

After years of legal wrangling, Dr. William Ayres, an 81-year-old former San Mateo psychiatrist accused of molesting boys during examinations in the 1990s, admitted to the charges against him Thursday. A wheelchair-bound Ayres pleaded no contest to eight felony molestation charges just four days into jury selection in his second trial in San Mateo County Superior Court. His first trial ended in a hung jury and a mistrial in 2009. Read More

Oft-reviled fisherman in court over illicit haul

The “world’s greatest fisherman” has been pinched in a king-size crab scandal. Dennis Sturgell, 60, whom the San Francisco Chronicle once dubbed the “world’s greatest fisherman” in a 2008 article, is facing charges of unlawful fishing in connection with an incident in San Francisco last fall in which he allegedly possessed more than 54,000 pounds of Dungeness crab. On Thursday, Sturgell pleaded not guilty to the charges and is scheduled to return to court June 20, Assistant District Attorney Alex Bastian said. Read More

Victim fatally shot this afternoon in Bayview

Police are investigating a fatal shooting in San Francisco's Bayview District this afternoon. Officers responded at 3:43 p.m. to reports that a male victim had been shot in the 1100 block of Hudson Avenue, Officer Carlos Manfredi said. The officers performed CPR on the victim until medics arrived and transported him to San Francisco General Hospital. However, the victim succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, Manfredi said. Cameron Myers, 20, identified as homicide victim

Cameron Myers, 20, of Auburn has been identified as the man found with fatal stab wounds early Wednesday near India Basin Shoreline Park. Neighbors called 911 after hearing Myers screaming near Innes Avenue and Arelious Walker Drive about 1:45 a.m. Myers later died at San Francisco General Hospital. Muni robberies rampant Wednesday

At least four cellphone robberies were reported on Muni buses or at transit shelters Wednesday, police said. About 11 a.m., a 25-year-old woman who was reportedly waiting for the bus at Third and Mission streets was knocked to the ground by a man in his 20s who swiped her cellphone. Fifty minutes later, police said, a 29-year-old woman waiting at a bus stop at Geary and Laguna streets was robbed of her cellphone when a juvenile snatched it from her hand. He fled with the phone after a struggle, police said. Read More
