Man released from jail by mistake appears in court

 A 28-year-old man who was convicted of assaulting his girlfriend and then accidentally released from San Mateo County jail in late July appeared in San Mateo County Superior Court Wednesday on felony charges that he intentionally missed a court hearing after his release. Alfredo Guadalupe Ortiz was convicted July 25 of felony domestic violence that occurred in July 2007 and was facing nine years in prison, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office. Sixth suspect arrested in murder of brother and sister

Mountain View police Wednesday announced the arrest of a sixth suspect in the fatal shooting of a brother and sister in June. Eric Williams, 22, was arrested without incident in Union City on Tuesday on an outstanding warrant for two counts of murder and one count of conspiracy to commit murder, according to Mountain View police spokeswoman Liz Wylie. Maria Teresa Sanchez-Aquino, 27, and her brother Omar Aquino, 24, were found shot to death the morning of June 28 in their Plymouth Street home, Mountain View police Sgt. Ken Leal said. Read More

Huge manhunt on for suspect in councilman's shooting

Police gave an updated description Wednesday afternoon of a man suspected of shooting 22-year-old Fairfield City Councilman Matt Garcia on Monday night. At a news conference at City Hall, police Lt. Bob Bunting described the suspect as a light-skinned black or Hispanic man in his late teens or early 20s. He is approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall with a medium build, Bunting said. Police are investigating Garcia's activities prior to the shooting and don't yet know whether he was singled out, Bunting said.  Read More

 A 56-year-old San Francisco woman will stand trial for multiple counts of assault with a deadly weapon for allegedly threatening two police officers with a knife before they shot her in the torso and face, a San Francisco Superior Court judge ruled Wednesday. Read More

Police arrest suspects in takeover robberies

Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason said Wednesday that police have arrested three suspects in a series of takeover robberies in the city in recent weeks. "By no means is our investigation over, but we are confident we have the key players in custody for the robberies that occurred in the last six weeks," Thomason said. Former S.F. firefighter suspected of sex assaults

Authorities are searching for a former San Francisco firefighter accused of sexually assaulting several women, using his badge to garner their trust. Horacio Candia Jr., 48, is charged with three counts of forced oral copulation, one count of sexual battery, one count of making terrorist threats and another for false imprisonment, according to police. Oakland driver accused of killing 4-year-old charged with felony

A motorist who allegedly struck and killed a 4-year-old boy with his van in Oakland and then fled will be arraigned today on felony hit-and-run charges, Alameda County Assistant District Attorney Norbert Chu said. Chu said he also charged the suspect, 27-year-old Juan Magana, with a misdemeanor charge of being an unlicensed driver and a misdemeanor charge of filing a false police report. Read More

Accused Oakland serial killer 'cold, calculated,' prosecutor says

A prosecutor told jurors today that a former Navy-enlisted man from Oakland "made a cold, calculated decision to kill" five young women in gruesome fashion in the East Bay over a four-month span in 1985. In his closing argument in Anthony McKnight's death penalty trial in Alameda County Superior Court, prosecutor Jim Meehan said McKnight "knew what he was doing" and chose isolated locations, such as parks and industrial areas, to kill his victims. Dad, uncle stop kidnap attempt at San Bruno store

A 7-year-old boy standing in his family's San Bruno store Tuesday night was nearly snatched by two men before his father and uncle intervened, San Bruno police Cmdr. Noreen Hanlon said today. The boy was with his father and uncle in Sam's Food Mart, the business they own at 899 San Mateo Ave., Hanlon said. Two men in their 20s entered the store around 8:20 p.m. and grabbed the boy, bringing him with them as they backed toward the exit. Read More
