Violence has exploded in the Mission district this week and a surge in police numbers in the neighborhood has failed to quell gang-related killings. Six people have died from gunshot wounds in the area in two weeks.
San Francisco police Chief Heather Fong said Friday that the department would use overtime funds to put additional police in the area.
During a press conference to announce the extra resources, Fong read from a prepared statement and refused to answer questions about the violence or about police investigations.

A San Francisco father Thursday marked the third anniversary of the unsolved slaying of his 20-year-old son with the announcement of a new $250,000 reward posted by the city.
The parents and siblings of Brian Marquez, shot dead outside a grocery in the city's Mission District on Labor Day weekend in 2005, are hoping that anyone who may have seen the killing will come forward.

The defense attorney for a former Navy-enlisted man from Oakland who's accused of killing five young women in the East Bay over a four-month span in 1985 told jurors today that he doesn't think the murders were premeditated.
In his closing argument in Anthony McKnight's death penalty trial in Alameda County Superior Court, defense attorney Alex Selvin said, "We don't have any evidence for first-degree murder because all of the evidence in this case is circumstantial."

Three suspects in a rash of takeover robberies at Oakland restaurants and other businesses were charged with multiple counts of robbery today, according to Alameda County Assistant District Attorney Tom Rogers.
Rogers said Rachaan Lamonthe, 30, Leon Luster, 29, and Shante Bostic, all of Oakland, are scheduled to be arraigned in Alameda County Superior Court this afternoon.
Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason said the three suspects were arrested Monday following a takeover robbery at the K&T Nail Salon at 10814 Bancroft Ave. shortly after 6 p.m.

San Carlos police today are trying to identify a man who robbed a Bank of America Wednesday afternoon.
The suspect, who appeared to be unarmed, entered the bank in the 700 block of Laurel Street around 4:40 p.m. and handed the teller a note demanding money, police Detective Jeff McCourtie said.
After receiving an undisclosed amount of cash, the suspect left the bank and got into a dark gray Acura parked near the back of the building.
The vehicle had rear tail-light damage, police said.

A San Francisco couple accused in connection with the December death of their housemate will stand trial on charges of murder and accessory to murder, a San Francisco Superior Court judge ruled today.
Judge Robert Dondero found that evidence presented by prosecutors at the preliminary hearing of Richard Carelli and Michele Pinkerton, both 38, was sufficient to show "probable cause" in the Dec. 22 death of 49-year-old Leonard Milo Hoskins at their Mission Terrace home.
