Tiger Woods recounts round with Obama, awaits Match Play

MARANA, Ariz. — Tiger Woods delivered a State of the Game on President Barack Obama’s golfing prowess and the news wasn’t all bad. “If he ever spent — after these four years — spent more time playing the game of golf, I’m sure he could get to where he’s a pretty good stick,” Woods said Wednesday. Woods comes into the Match Play Championship on somewhat of a winning streak. PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) — With one last birdie, Brandt Snedeker finally had a chance to catch his breath at one of the best places in golf. He was on the 18th tee at Pebble Beach with a three-shot lead Sunday as he gazed into the sun at an endless ocean and tried to grasp just how far he has come in the past few months. PEBBLE BEACH — Hunter Mahan was bracing for the worst of Pebble Beach, his golf bag weighed down with rain gear and everything else to handle nasty weather. Instead, he was reminded how much he loves this place. It helps that Mahan drilled a 3-wood onto the 18th green for a two-putt birdie that gave him a 6-under 66 and a share of the lead to par with Russell Knox in the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. U.S. Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III said nationalistic pride fanned by the London Olympics would further fire up interest in the matches against Europe’s best dozen golfers starting on Friday. “Our whole country is interested, because it’s the U.S. team. Andrew Bonner, 17, stands atop the year’s team points list and will be looking for his third consecutive win at the oldest match-play junior tournament in the country.
