As Briana Stewart tore up the track at James Logan High School in Union City, scholarship offers poured into her mailbox. The star hurdler received letters from top Division I programs, including Oregon, LSU and Kansas.
But on decision day, she chose a school that had never participated in an NCAA track meet: Division II Academy of Art University.
“I wanted a career that I’d actually be interested in for the rest of my life,” said Stewart, who fell in love with the school’s fashion merchandising program.

No. 1 Cal fired a school and course-record 23-under-par score of 265 in Thursday’s opening round at the NCAA Pullman Regional to take the lead after the first 18 holes of the 54-hole event hosted by Washington State. Cal leads the regional by two strokes over second-place St. Mary’s (267).
Joël Stalter and Michael Weaver paced the Bears with matching 7-under-par 65s.
Elsewhere, Stanford sits in third place in the Columbus Regional after a first-day 7-over 291. The Cardinal trail Charlotte by four shots. Cameron Wilson led the Cardinal with a 1-under 70.

San Francisco Golden Gate Rugby will host Old Pugent Sound Beach in the West semifinal of USA Rugby’s Elite Cup competition, which features the top clubs across the nation, on Saturday at 3 p.m. on Treasure Island.
A victory by SFGG would put it in the championship game against the East’s top squad on May 25 in Glendale, Colo.

STANFORD — In a fast-moving NFL, the big-play tight end is becoming a trump card in the deck of offensive coordinators around the league. They’re too quick for linebackers to cover and too big for defensive backs to handle. They can act as a fourth receiver against traditional 4-3 defenses or serve as run blockers when coaches bring in the nickel.
“The tight end is that mismatch position,” Stanford coach David Shaw said. “If you don’t have [a versatile tight end], you miss it — you have to coach around it. But if you have one, defenses have to account for him.”

A record-breaking season for the Cal women’s basketball team ended in agonizing defeat Sunday, but the Bears’ first Final Four appearance is just the first rung in a high ladder for Lindsay Gottlieb’s program.
Throughout the season, Gottlieb said one of her team’s goals was to “put Cal in the conversation of the most elite teams in the country.” Cal succeeded.
The Bears won a record 32 games, a share of the Pac-12 Conference title and even President Barack Obama recognized them as one of the country’s top teams in his presidential bracket.
