BERKELEY — Justin Cobbs is regaining confidence in his jump shot and it earned him Pac-12 Player of the Week honors this week.
With the help of Cobbs’ buzzer beater on Thursday and his 18 points on Saturday, the Cal men’s basketball team knocked off Oregon and Oregon State on the road last week to move within striking distance of a Pac-12 conference title.
After winning seven of their last eight, the Bears (18-9, 10-5) are now trailing first-place Arizona (11-4) and Oregon (11-4) by a single game and Cobbs’ turnaround is a key part of the team’s recent success.

STANFORD — Stanford is referred to as “Tight End U” these days because of the steady stream of NFL picks the football team has churned out at that position in recent years. But when the Cardinal set out to defend their Rose Bowl championship in the fall, they’ll be featuring a pair of fresh faces in their double-tight end set.
Spring practices got under way at Dan Elliott Field on Monday, kicking off auditions for the roles previously performed by Zach Ertz and Levine Toilolo.

The City College of San Francisco men’s basketball team was dominant in the regular season en route to racking up a perfect 28-0 record. As a result, the Rams were rewarded with the top seed in the Northern California Regional of the state tournament Monday.
CCSF will open tournament play at home on Saturday at 7 p.m. against the winner of a first-round matchup between San Jose City College and De Anza College. The Rams blitzed San Jose 104-57 in the regular season, but did not face De Anza.

BERKELEY — Layshia Clarendon scored 26 points and No. 6 Cal rallied from 17 points down in the first half to beat Oregon State 58-56 on Sunday, extending the longest winning streak in school history.
Clarendon did most of her work in the second half, including an off-balance 14-foot leaner that gave Cal a 57-51 lead with just under 4 minutes remaining. The Bears (25-2, 15-1 Pac-12) didn’t make another basket after that but held on for the win after being dominated for much of the game.

STANFORD — Chiney Ogwumike scored 27 points, grabbed a school record 24 rebounds and set a Stanford career mark with her 52nd double-double Sunday, leading No. 4 Stanford to a 74-50 victory over Oregon.
Ogwumike, a junior, broke the career double-double record she had briefly shared with her older sister, Nnemkadi Ogwumike. Chiney, the Pac-12s leading scorer and rebounder, broke her sister’s single-game rebounding record of 23, set last season against Oregon. The younger Ogwumike’s previous career high for rebounds was 19, set at Tennessee on Dec. 12, 2012.

EUGENE, Ore. — Justin Cobbs wanted the final shot.
Cal’s junior point guard hit a jumper in the final second as the Bears made it 11 straight wins over Oregon and moved within one game of the 23rd-ranked Ducks in the Pac-12 Conference standings with a 48-46 road win on Thursday night.
Oregon’s Damyean Dotson missed a shot with 29 seconds left and Richard Solomon grabbed the rebound for Cal, which took a timeout with 25 seconds left. Cobbs dribbled until making a 16-footer with 0.7 seconds remaining for the winner.

New Cal football coach Sonny Dykes has shown a sensitivity to his new home by trying to immerse himself and his team in campus life.
The most recent example: The team, at Dykes’ suggestion, attended the Cal-UCLA basketball game at Haas Pavilion, cheering the Bears to an upset victory. “I’m trying to get the players involved in student activities, not just sports,” he said, while meeting with media. “I’ve told them, ‘They support you by coming to the games, so you should support them, too.” They enjoyed the basketball game, probably more than they expected to.”

BERKELEY — Coach Mike Montgomery insists that the hoopla surrounding his shove of forward Allen Crabbe isn’t distracting his team as it prepares to meet No. 23 Oregon in Eugene on Thursday.
With four wins in five games, the Bears (16-9, 8-5) are not only contending for an NCAA Tournament berth, a win over Oregon (21-5, 10-3) would put them within a game of first place in the Pac-12 Conference.
And while the drama on the sideline is overshadowing the Bears’ turnaround on the court, Montgomery said Tuesday the team is growing because of the experience.

Cal athletic director Sandy Barbour is throwing a big, fat air ball by not disciplining coach Mike Montgomery for shoving Allen Crabbe during Sunday’s basketball game against USC.
UC Berkeley is recognized around the world for being a progressive, forward-thinking institution, but Barbour’s inaction on this matter suggests that the athletic department is stuck in the past.
As inappropriate as Montgomery’s behavior was, it’s the university’s response — or lack thereof — in the aftermath that really leaves you scratching your head.
