Stanford football team second in more ways than one

Stanford
Tailgating by flashlight and candles are hardly in keeping with the great tradition of the Big Game. But don’t blame ESPN for Saturday’s 7:15 p.m. kickoff at Stanford Stadium. According to Pac-12 associate commissioner Duane Lindberg, Cal and Stanford both chose the prime-time national TV appearance over a regionally televised 12:30 p.m. start, which would have been seen by only 20 percent of the country. “We want the best games in the best times to the largest audience,” Lindberg said. Penn State officials are hopelessly lost in a moral wasteland

For the first time in 61 years, Joe Paterno was not part of a Penn State football game on Saturday. That was, obviously, a good start. Penn State athletic director Tim Curley, vice president Gary Schultz and president Graham Spanier were also gone. This, too, was a necessary and appropriate step. Read More

In final game at AT&T Park, Cal football can lock up bowl game eligibility

Cal has not defeated Oregon State since 2006, but the Bears enter senior day at AT&T Park riding high after a convincing bounce-back win against Washington State last week. “They’ve been a thorn in our side for years,” Cal coach Jeff Tedford said. “Our players understand they haven’t had success against Oregon State.” The Beavers (2-7, 2-4 Pac-12 North) have won the past four meetings between the teams, including last year’s 35-7 win in Corvallis, Ore., and have won 10 of the past 12. Times have been tough recently for the USF women’s basketball team, but an infusion to young talent and a change in mindset has coach Jennifer Azzi confident this season will be different. “[There is] more of a clear focus,” Azzi said. “The players that are here want to be here and they have more of our mindset.” The Dons finished eighth in the West Coast Conference last season and were selected to finish ninth in this season’s preseason poll. Penn State needs major shake-up after scandal

After reading the 23-page Pennsylvania state grand jury report outlining 40 counts of felony sexual abuse against former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, I don’t know if I am more outraged by the allegations that he assaulted eight boys over a 15-year period or the subsequent behavior of university officials. With starters all back, USF men's basketball team out to improve on last year’s progress

At the West Coast Conference media day on Oct. 27, USF men’s basketball coach Rex Walters said all he wants to do is coach, recruit and schedule. Although he didn’t have to recruit heavily this past season, he and his team are going into the 2011-12 season with a full head of steam. The Dons collected 10 conference wins for the first time in nearly 20 years and finished third in the WCC, only one game behind conference powerhouses Gonzaga and St. Mary’s. Read More
