Stanford women’s basketball’s senior forward Nnemkadi Ogwumike was named the United States Basketball Writer’s Association National Player of the Week on Tuesday following her career-best performance in a 97-80 win over sixth-ranked Tennessee on Dec. 20.
The award came a day after Ogwumike was also named Bank of the West Pac-12 Conference Player of the Week for the second time this season.

Cal offensive lineman Matt Summers-Gavin hasn’t had the easiest path to success in his three-plus seasons with the Golden Bears, but this year everything seemed to fall into place.
"To be able to play a full season is awesome," Summers-Gavin said. "Just to be in there with the guys, it’s a great feeling."
The former St. Ignatius standout had dealt with injuries, including a concussion, which cost him what would have been his freshman season and most of training camp during his sophomore season.

Coming off a near two-week layoff, the Stanford men’s basketball team rolled to a 75-55 win against San Diego over the weekend. It was the fourth straight win for a Cardinal team that has been the early-season surprise in the Pac-12 Conference.
"I think we’re continuing to take strides forward, but there are still things for us to work on," Stanford forward Josh Owens said. "We’re not satisfied. We know we can get better."

Brett Baer kicked a 50-yard field goal as time ran out, lifting Louisiana-Lafayette to 32-30 victory over San Diego State in the New Orleans Bowl on Saturday night.
Playing in their first bowl game as a Division I FBS team, the Ragin Cajuns (9-4) led most of the way but fell behind 30-29 when Aztecs quarterback Ryan Lindley connected with Colin Lockett on a 12-yard touchdown strike with 35 seconds to go.

Wayne State still had plenty to celebrate after its surprising run to the Division II championship game came up short of a title.
Unranked and unheralded, they navigated four straight road playoff games before losing to Pittsburg State 35-21 on Saturday in a wild game packed with big special teams plays.
"Our goal was to win the national championship," safety Jeremy Jones said. "Obviously that didn't happen but I'm not going to let this one loss taint the whole season."

With 47 seconds left in the game and his team hanging onto a 45-42 lead, the City College of San Francisco football team had a dilemma: Kick the field goal and give Mount San Antonio College the ball back with a chance to win the game, or go for the first down and ice the game?
Coach George Rush decided to go for it and the decision paid off as the Rams won the state junior college championship.
