Matthew Dellavdeova back in a groove for St. Mary’s

St. Mary’s had a big concern coming into the NCAA Tournament’s First Four. Its career scoring leader suddenly couldn’t hit a shot. Matthew Dellavedova hit his first two from behind the arc Tuesday night, and the tournament got its first big night by a dominant guard. The Australian star emerged from his slump and scored 22 points in a 67-54 victory over Middle Tennessee. DAYTON, Ohio — Matthew Dellavedova scored 22 points on Tuesday night, and St. Mary’s got a good start on its second straight NCAA Tournament appearance, beating Middle Tennessee 67-54 in the First Four. The Gaels (28-6) make a quick trip to Auburn Hills, Mich., to play sixth-seeded Memphis on Thursday. St. Mary’s is making back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances for the first time in its history. Cal women gets No. 2 seed, draws Fresno State

BERKELEY — After sharing the Pac-12 Conference regular-season title, the Cal women’s basketball team earned a No. 2 seed for the NCAA Tournament and a first-round date with Fresno State. “When you reflect on what on what this team has done, and where this program was years and years ago, I think it’s pretty neat that we’re on that 2-line,” said coach Lindsay Gottlieb, whose Golden Bears were a No. 8 seed the previous year, her first in Berkeley. “But right now our focus is on Fresno State. Stanford women land No. 1 seed in NCAA Tournament

STANFORD — The road to a sixth straight Final Four begins on the Farm for the Stanford women’s basketball team and it could wind through a familiar foe in Spokane, Wash. The Cardinal landed a No. 1 seed in the women’s NCAA Tournament on Monday — the 10th time Stanford has done so — and will tip-off play in the Spokane Region against No. 16 Tulsa (17-16) at Maples Pavilion on Sunday. If the Cardinal (31-2) advance through the bracket, they face the prospect of running into cross-bay rival and No. 2 seed Cal in the Elite Eight. Read More

In a way, it’s fitting that the Blue Raiders had to pack for a couple extra days. DAYTON, Ohio — St. Mary’s lost to Gonzaga in its conference tournament final, but made it to the NCAA Tournament anyway. The Gaels will help open the First Four in Dayton on Tuesday night, facing Middle Tennessee. The winner will play Memphis on Thursday. St. Mary’s (27-6) lost to Gonzaga 65-51 in the West Coast Conference title game, the third time it fell to the Zags during the season. Gonzaga got the No. 1 seed in the West on Sunday. Read More

No. 12 Cal catches a break with NCAA Tournament game on home turf

BERKELEY — An upset loss to Utah cost the Cal men’s basketball team a higher seed in March Madness, but the Bears caught a break by snagging a game in their own backyard. After back-to-back losses, Cal (20-11) landed a No. 12 seed in the East region of the NCAA Tournament. Despite the setback, the team received the good fortune of playing in front of its home crowd in a rematch against fifth-seeded UNLV (25-9) at HP Pavilion in San Jose on Thursday. Read More

Stanford will have chance to defend NIT title

While it’s not the NCAA Tournament, the Stanford men’s basketball team will be playing in the postseason, and in a familiar setting. A year after winning the NIT, the Cardinal (18-14) will look to defend their title this time around and earn another trip back to Madison Square Garden. Coach Johnny Dawkins’ squad earned a No. 4 seed in the tournament and will host Stephen F. Austin (27-4) at Maples Pavilion on Tuesday at 8 p.m. Only two other programs have won consecutive NIT championships, St. Johns in 1943 and 1944 and South Carolina in 2005 and 2006. Read More
