SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Wherever Allen Crabbe went, Syracuse's zone defense followed.
With the Pac-12 Player of the Year bottled up by the Orange, California had little chance to advance in the NCAA tournament despite having the home-crowd advantage.
Crabbe was held to eight points on 3-for-9 shooting, backcourt mate Justin Cobbs scored just five points and the 12th-ranked Golden Bears once again failed to make it to the round of 16, losing 66-60 to fourth-seeded Syracuse on Saturday night.

Wayne Tinkle isn’t traveling far to see his daughter and the Stanford women’s basketball team (31-2) take on Tulsa (17-16) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Maples Pavilion today.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Matthew Dellavedova caught the ball and took one more 3-pointer.
It was about as good a scenario as St. Mary’s could have hoped for, especially since the Gaels were trailing by five moments earlier. But Dellavedova, the school’s career leader in scoring, missed long as time expired.
“As soon as Delli got the ball in the corner, we all thought it was going to go in,” St. Mary’s forward Brad Waldow said. “We knew it was going to go in, but it just didn’t fall. That’s it.”

SAN JOSE — After executing the game plan to near perfection for more than 59 minutes, the Cal men’s basketball team almost let an upset victory in the NCAA Tournament slip away.
A suffocating zone defense and plenty of scoring help for Allen Crabbe propelled the 12th-seeded Bears to a 64-61 victory over No. 5 UNLV at HP Pavilion in San Jose on Thursday. But the “home” team provided plenty of drama for the faithful down the stretch.
“It wasn’t always smooth,” Coach Mike Montgomery said.

St. Mary’s had a big concern coming into the NCAA Tournament’s First Four. Its career scoring leader suddenly couldn’t hit a shot.
Matthew Dellavedova hit his first two from behind the arc Tuesday night, and the tournament got its first big night by a dominant guard. The Australian star emerged from his slump and scored 22 points in a 67-54 victory over Middle Tennessee.
The 11th-seeded Gaels (28-6) will look for more of the same from Dellavedova today after a quick trip to Auburn Hills, Mich., to play sixth-seeded Memphis.
