Once lockout is solved, big issues await Raiders, 49ers

Nnamdi Asomugha
An agreement appears close on a new NFL labor deal, which is good news for everybody, but both the Raiders and 49ers will face formidable problems when the lockout ends. Raiders owner Al Davis had hoped the new agreement would give clubs the right of first refusal on three potential free agents, but it does not, so the Raiders could lose cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, tight end Zach Miller and running back Michael Bush. Asomugha is almost certainly gone. Who will sign him? I’d bet on the New England Patriots because they have the smartest front office in the NFL. Read More

In Harbaugh we should trust

Jim Harbaugh
Jim Harbaugh’s foresight will mitigate the damage done to the 49ers by the NFL lockout. With a complete turnover in the coaching staff, the 49ers needed spring workouts more than other teams. In years past, teams with coaching changes were allowed an extra minicamp. The 49ers, along with every other NFL team, were prohibited this year from having any spring workouts. Read More

Fans could be game-changer in NFL labor dispute

NFL
As hearings resume in the 8th District Court of Appeals today, the Sports Fans Coalition has filed a brief with the court asking that the NFL lockout be lifted. The NFL coaches association has also filed a brief. Coaches want to be able to work with players, as they usually do with minicamps in the offseason, but they are hamstrung by the lockout. The most interesting part of this to me is the involvement of the fans group. Because of social networking, fans are now able to make their voices heard on this issue and others in the NFL that affect them. Read More

NFL lockout hurting more than players, owners

NFL lockout
The NFL is a huge business, affecting many people other than those playing the game, and the fallout from the lockout is already being felt. “There are a lot of people whose income depends in large part on the games,” said player agent Jason Chayut of New York-based SportsStars Inc. “People like ticket sellers, vendors. If the games aren’t played, they lose income and it’s not like they can make it up because the season can’t be extended into April.” Club employes can feel the crunch, too. “The Miami Dolphins have already cut salaries of employees,” noted Chayut. The A’s are desperate for offense, but not enough to bring in Bradley

Milton Bradley
Fans have always been convinced they know exactly how to improve their teams, and they express their views in emails and blogs. Right now, I’m being besieged by A’s fans who bemoan their team’s lack of hitting. One suggested they should pick up Milton Bradley, just released by the Seattle Mariners. I don’t think so. The A’s had Bradley once, and he helped them in the 2006 postseason. But the team also had Frank Thomas, who could talk to Bradley, and Ken Macha, a manager he respected. They have neither of those components now. Read More

Smith still a part of 49ers’ plans

The entirety of the NFL’s offseason came and went in a blink.  There wasn’t enough to it to be anything more than a subplot to the league’s draft. Players were there and then they were gone, locks securely back in place. However, in that single afternoon where fans were actually free to think about football again, everything about the 2011 season changed for 49ers fans.  Alex Smith got a playbook. And you thought the Giants had cornered the market on torture.  Read More

Players, fans would benefit if NFL lockout were lifted

Roger Goodell
By the end of this week, we should know if an NFL lockout will remain in place. The players won round one when U.S. District Court Judge Susan Richard Nelson ruled against the lockout, but the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 on Friday to issue a temporary stay. That court is regarded as the most business-friendly appellate court in the country, but the temporary stay was apparently granted to give the court a chance to review Nelson’s decision. Read More
