Raiders, Niners take different approaches into draft

Because of the way they’ve been run the last few years, the 49ers and Raiders will face very different scenarios in this year’s NFL Draft, which begins Thursday. Adroit personnel moves have netted the 49ers extra draft picks, so they’ll have 13 to use or trade for future usage. Their first round pick is next-to-last, but trading Alex Smith to Kansas City netted them the Chiefs’ second-round pick, second in that round, so they’ll have two picks in four choices in that segment. The bargain-bin makeover by general manager Reggie McKenzie and Dennis Allen is nearly complete, with the NFL draft providing the finishing touches to a franchise in transition. It’s apparent based on offseason maneuvers the new regime has identified the reasons for its 4-12 season after back-to-back 8-8 seasons in 2010 and 2011. SANTA CLARA — San Francisco 49ers defensive tackle Justin Smith and linebacker Aldon Smith are working back from offseason surgeries, and general manager Trent Baalke expects each to be at full strength and ready for the start of training camp this summer.Running back Kendall Hunter, who underwent surgery late in the season for a torn left Achilles, also plans to be full go by training camp after he recently resumed sprint work. NFL to release 2013 schedule Thursday

NEW YORK — The NFL will release its 2013 schedule Thursday night with a prime-time TV show. Completion of the schedule was delayed because of a conflict in Baltimore, where the Orioles are playing on Sept. 5, the night of the now-traditional Thursday season kickoff. So the Super Bowl champion Ravens will open on the road. The first full weekend of games will be Sept. 8-9. For the second straight year, the NFL will have a full slate of Thursday night games. Cal receiver Keenan Allen’s combine drug test reportedly red-flagged

Cal wide receiver Keenan Allen’s drug test at the NFL Scouting Combine was red-flagged, according to an ESPN report. The report said Allen’s test showed suspicious levels of water — a sign that someone could be attempting to flush their system — and was ordered to take another drug test. Results of that test are not known, and Allen’s agent, J.T. Johnson, said he client did not fail a drug test. Read More

Steve Young, George Seifert join 49ers’ bid to host 50th Super Bowl

The San Francisco 49ers will make a bid next month to host the 50th Super Bowl in 2016, and announced today that they are bringing in a couple of stars from the franchise's illustrious history to help out. Former quarterback Steve Young and coach George Seifert are joining the San Francisco Bay Area regional bid committee to host Super Bowl L at the 49ers' new stadium in Santa Clara, which opens next year. ALAMEDA — The Oakland Raiders have signed safety Reggie Smith and running back Rashad Jennings to free agent contracts.General manager Reggie McKenzie announced the deals Thursday.Smith played four years with San Francisco after being a third-round pick in 2008. He had two interceptions and seven passes defensed in 45 games. He was with Carolina in training camp last year but was cut before the season. Read More

ALAMEDA — Oakland Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie is looking for better luck this season with his free-agent cornerback additions.The Raiders signed Mike Jenkins on Tuesday to team with the recently added Tracy Porter to add experience to an untested secondary. Oakland also signed free agent safety Usama Young and brought back free agent defensive end Andre Carter and cornerback Joselio Hanson for their second seasons with the team. Read More

Raiders waive LB Rolando McClain

ALAMEDA — The Oakland Raiders waived linebacker Rolando McClain on Friday, less than three years after drafting him eighth overall to be the centerpiece of their defense. McClain was mostly a disappointment in Oakland. He struggled during his first two years and then clashed with coach Dennis Allen and his staff last season. McClain had his role significantly reduced last season, was suspended for two games for conduct detrimental to the team, and did not play the final five games of the season. Read More

Raiders to open preseason at home with the Black Hole

For the second straight year, the Raiders will kick off their preseason schedule with a home game against the Dallas Cowboys. Tony Romo and Co. will invade the Black Hole the week of Aug. 8, with an exact time and date to be announced later. It will be the 29th preseason meeting between the two teams. The Raiders’ other home preseason contest will come the in the third week of preseason action, the week of Aug. 22 against the Chicago Bears. Read More
