Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy had their best start ever Thursday in The Players Championship. It still wasn’t enough to catch Roberto Castro, who had never played the TPC Sawgrass and made a debut he won’t soon forget.
Castro hit shots into tap-in range on the famed 17th and 18th holes on his way to a 9-under 63 in perfect scoring conditions in the morning. He tied the course record held by Fred Couples and Greg Norman, and it gave him a three-shot lead — the largest 18-hole margin in 21 years at Sawgrass — over McIlroy and Zach Johnson.

The Sharks will begin the second round of the playoffs somewhat short-handed after losing forward Adam Burish to an undisclosed upper-body injury.
Burish got hurt during the team’s 4-3 overtime win over the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday night that wrapped up the first playoff sweep in franchise history. Burish did not return to that game after being slashed by Vancouver’s Alexander Edler late in the second period. Burish’s right hand was wrapped in the dressing room after the game.

Everything is going the Cleveland Indians’ way. There’s no dispute or debate about that.
One day after the home run that wasn’t, Jason Kipnis, Nick Swisher and Mark Reynolds connected for homers and Scott Kazmir struck out 10 in six innings, leading Cleveland to a 9-2 win over the A’s on Thursday and a four-game sweep of Oakland.

The confident aura the Warriors are giving off right now might be the only thing brighter than those yellow shirts every home fan is expected to be wearing again for Game 3 against the San Antonio Spurs tonight at ear-piercing Oracle Arena.
Maybe for good reason, too.
The Warriors have outshot, outrebounded and outhustled the Spurs through the first two games of their Western Conference semifinal. And if not for an unprecedented collapse in Game 1, Golden State would be returning to the Bay Area with a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series instead of being tied.

Klay Thompson scored 34 points, Stephen Curry added 22 and the Golden State Warriors withstood another furious rally by the San Antonio Spurs for a 100-91 victory Wednesday night to even their series at one game apiece and snap a 30-game skid in the Alamo City.
Thompson, who scored 29 points in the first half, added 14 rebounds for Golden State, which had not won in San Antonio since Feb. 14, 1997. Harrison Barnes had 13 points, Carl Landry added 10 and Andrew Bogut had six points and 11 rebounds.

Buster Posey and Andres Torres waited three hours before making their contributions to yet another walk-off win for the Giants.
Make it five such victories for the reigning World Series champions by early May.
Torres lined a game-ending single to right field with two outs in the 10th inning to score Posey with the winning run, lifting the Giants to a 4-3 victory against the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday to avoid a sweep.

An apparent game-tying homer by the A’s Adam Rosales was ruled a double by umpires in the ninth inning, and the Cleveland Indians held on to beat Oakland 4-3 on Wednesday night.
Rosales sent a drive off Indians closer Chris Perez that looked as if it cleared the left field wall. However, second base umpire Angel Hernandez called it a double, and the crew concurred after leaving the field to review the videotape.
When the umpires returned and told Rosales to stay at second, A’s manager Bob Melvin sprinted onto the field and was immediately ejected.

Do you still think the Sharks are too old, too slow and too soft to be legitimate Stanley Cup contenders?
Two months ago, you wanted to blow up the band, convinced Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau and Dan Boyle’s best years had passed. Now, the team looks like the most balanced squad to ever throw on the teal sweaters.

He may make a living behind the wheel of a sports car, but Johannes van Overbeek is not one to brood on what is left behind in his rear-view.
“You get full of self-doubt,” the 40-year-old said, recalling some of the hardships that entail a professional racing career that began 17 years ago. “But learning how to punch through that and put it to rest and do better next time is a trait that applies to anything in life when you’re down and out.”
