Something trey wrong in college hoops

The other day, on a treadmill in Charlotte, I was reminded why I can’t stand college basketball. Forced to occupy my time, I began watching a game between Iowa and Indiana.I can’t remember any of the players’ names, but at one point, an Indiana guard threw an entry pass into the low post, where a Hoosiers big man began to make a move. For no apparent reason, the Iowa perimeter defender rushed down into the low post to double-team, despite Indiana’s big man having no discernible advantage. The big man threw it back out and the Indiana guard knocked down a 3-pointer. Read More

Whitley making beautiful music

In hindsight, it seems obvious Raymond Whitley would not be a guitar or saxophone guy.The 6-foot-5, 220-pound point forward on the International Studies Academy boys’ basketball team may be an aspiring rapper who has already had songs on two Bay Area hip-hop stations as a member of the Youngstars. But as the surprisingly soft-spoken Whitley began talking about expanding his musical scope, he revealed an interesting aspect of his personality."I’d like to get into jazz, too," Whitley said. "Learn the tuba." Read More

SAP Open losers are just speed bumps

Tennis has a storied history of marathon matches that take on epic proportions as games build — think Andre Agassi defeating James Blake in five sets at the 2005 U.S. Open or Bjorn Borg surviving John McEnroe in the 1981 Wimbledon final. The sport also has its breezier moments, as recently evidenced by Serena Williams’ 6-1, 6-2 waxing of Maria Sharapova in the Australian Open final that barely lasted an hour. Dickey: Kiffin autonomy good for Raiders

Because Al Davis seems to regard new Raiders coach Lane Kiffin as a younger version of himself, he has given Kiffin authority to revamp the coaching staff. That’s the best news for Raiders fans in years. At the news conference announcing Kiffin’s hiring, Davis twice alluded to his time as an assistant coach at Southern Cal, when he was only slightly younger than Kiffin is now. Davis was known for his recruiting, and Kiffin, too, was regarded as a good recruiter at USC. Read More

Amaechi is a hero for other reasons

Let’s get two things straight (no pun intended ... unless you thought it was funny) right now: John Amaechi is no hero for coming out as a gay man in retirement, and he was no coward for staying in the closet as a player. For an entire week, I’ve listened to scores of opinions and read mountains of analysis, yet I remain unaware of anyone who has identified Amaechi for what he truly is: A good teammate. Read More
