USF gets lost in the wind

Aaron Poreda had already taken a few steps toward the dugout before turning around to see what he hoped would be the end of an inning.Instead, the USF left-hander caught the conclusion of a bad surprise. What first appeared to be a lazy fly ball off the bat of Santa Clara’s Ryan Conan got caught up in the wind and carried just over the glove of right fielder Luke Sommer for a three-run homer. The blast gave the Broncos a 3-1 lead in the top of the sixth inning and was the key blow as Santa Clara knocked off the Dons 4-3 at Benedetti Diamond. Read More

Sacred Heart: Staying cool under pressure

She started out 0-for-4 and ended up just 6-for-20, watching as short shots somehow caught a piece of the rim and rattled out and deep jumpers missed the target. But when the Sacred Heart Cathedral girls’ basketball team desperately needed some offense in the CIF Division III state title game, there was no doubt Jazmine Jackson would find the net. Read More

Riordan's best: Hard work makes difference

Dickey: Bonds, Cain — then pray for rain

Matt Cain has a terrible burden this season. Because the Giants’ plan for putting together a team is so flawed, their only chance to escape the NL West cellar is with a breakout season from Cain.It could happen. Cain has always had the kind of pitches, including a fastball that can get into the high 90s, that makes observers think he can pitch a shutout any time he starts. The only questions have been his pitch command and maturity. Read More

Legendary Robinson remembered fondly

To his very last day, Eddie Robinson was always battling something. There was the institutional racism that surrounded him, the piddling football budget he and his coaching staff subsisted on at predominantly black Grambling State and, ultimately, the Alzheimer’s disease that took his life at age 88. "He’d been fighting that battle for a long time," former Grambling quarterback and Super Bowl MVP Doug Williams said. "It was one of the many he fought in his lifetime." Robinson died Tuesday night, not long after being admitted to Lincoln General Hospital in Ruston, La., Williams said. Read More

Bialosky likes cleaning up

Nino Giarratano watched as Mitchell Bialosky walked up to the lineup card and smiled. After two-plus years of seeing his name next to the No. 8 or 9 spot, the USF first baseman had been bumped up to the cleanup spot for a March 2 game against Baylor. FORE! Examiner Weekend Golf Guide - April 5

A year ago at Augusta, Tiger Woods knew his ailing father, Earl, was not going to be around much longer. That is why Woods resorted to frantic tactics during the fourth round and wound up tied for third, three shots off the pace. But majors are where Tiger shines, what he was built for. He won the last two majors of 2006 and a Masters win would put him three-quarters of the way to a second Tiger Slam. While Woods downplays his opportunity for a third straight major, he is also very keenly aware of his place in history (12 career majors, just six behind Jack Nicklaus’ record). Read More
