Dickey: It’s Russell and nobody else

The Raiders got the quarterback they need, JaMarcus Russell. Now, they should start him. Immediately. What choice do they have? Their other quarterbacks are stiffs. Andrew Walter is a less talented Jeff George. Josh McCown, obtained in a weekend trade, is with his third team — for a good reason. He couldn’t beat out Jon Kitna in Detroit last year.Russell has enormous talent. He’s played in top-level collegiate competition and had some big games there, most notably in this year’s Sugar Bowl. Frantz: A soft spot for Brady

I hate Notre Dame. Got no use for the Fighting Irish whatsoever. Overhyped, overexposed and usually overrated. But I’ll tell you this: I wouldn’t wish the private hell that Brady Quinn went through Saturday on a public stage on my worst enemy. Four laborious hours of torture that would have made Jack Bauer cry, all under the white hot glare of a national audience just waiting to watch him break. Go back to Saturday afternoon withme. Close your eyes and imagine ... that it was you ... Read More

Lowell extends run to 17 straight

He is a picture of tranquility before and during the match, eyes hidden behind sunglasses and an easy smile on his face. But Lowell boys’ tennis coach Terence Doherty admits to feeling a little anxiety each year before the San Francisco Section tennis final, no matter how certain it seems the Cardinals’ dynasty will continue. "I’m always nervous in the few days leading up to it," Doherty said. "The expectations have been the same since I got here [in 2000], to get to this day and to win. And we always have the talent to do it." Read More

Liotta: Bay Area sports fans sleep easier now

I was having trouble sleeping, blaming my waking suddenly on bad dreams after the night after disappointing night of sports in the Bay Area. Ask my wife. I’d become downright grumpy. Mention Pedro Feliz and I’d snap. Baron Davis, and I’d mutter and grumble. Until the other night, that is, when I fell off into a deep slumber filled with dreams I hadn’t had in years. Read More

Player of the week: Alex Rodriguez

Not just the Player of the Week, but the Player of the Month, A-Rod has answered all his critics in the Bronx by responding with an April for the ages. In the New York Yankees’ key meeting with the Boston Red Sox last weekend, the much-maligned third baseman went 7-for-13 with two home runs and five RBIs. Monday against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, A-Rod smashed two more home runs to tie Albert Pujols’ record of 14 bombs in April, putting him on pace for 100-plus homers for the season. Now, if only manager Joe Torre could find a way to get A-Rod to pitch for the struggling Yanks. Read More
