The Riordan boys’ basketball coach said Monday he was granted a one-year leave of absence by the school to deal with what he called "personal situations beyond my control." He will be replaced on an interim basis by frosh-soph coach Rich Buckner, who played on the Crusaders’ 1990 state championship team.

Kevin Mitchell, the former linebacker who was a member of the 49ers’ last Super Bowl-winning team, died in his sleep at his Ashburn, Va., home. "I was blown away when I heard of Kevin’s death," Niners defensive tackle Bryant Young said. "We were in the same draft class and we always roomed together in training camp and on the road. You take for granted that people will be here forever and I feel bad that we can never have the chance to catch back up with each other. The USF, Cal, Stanford and San Jose State golf teams were selected to compete in the NCAA West Regional. The Dons, seeded No. 12, will play in St. George, Utah, on May 9, making it their sixth postseason appearance in seven years. USF had a remarkable season, capturing a pair of tournament titles as well as three runner-up showings, including a second-place finish to No. 4 Pepperdine in the West Coast Conference Championships.
