After nine days of dramatic and sometimes tabloidish testimony, the Floyd Landis arbitration hearing came to a close — but a verdict won’t come anytime soon. It will be at least a month before the three arbitrators will render a decision, which will likely be appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Landis could be stripped of his Tour de France title if he is found guilty of doping.

While the season didn’t go as planned, the USF baseball team did pull down some postseason hardware. Senior first baseman Mitchell Bialosky, senior outfielder Jonnie Knoble, senior catcher Jon Norfolk and junior left-hander Aaron Poreda were named All-West Coast Conference. Third baseman Derek Poppert was picked for the All-Freshman team. Poppert, junior infielder Brian Chavez and senior right-hander Jason Dufloth were named honorable mention all-conference for the Dons.

Is Barry Zito the reincarnation of Ray Sadecki? In 1966, the Giants traded for Sadecki, thinking they were getting the left-handed starter they needed to win the pennant. Two years earlier, at 23, Sadecki won 20 games for the St. Louis Cardinals, but he felt tremendous pressure because he was traded for Orlando Cepeda, the most popular Giant. In four seasons with the Giants, Sadecki was 32-39. Cepeda was the NL Most Valuable Player in 1967 and the Cardinals won the World Series.
