Diane Nukuri-Johnson tops women’s pack in Bay to Breakers

Diane Nukuri-Johnson
Diane Nukuri-Johnson would like to run Bay to Breakers in a costume someday, maybe even a wedding dress. But on Sunday, she kept it simple en route to finishing first among women runners. Wearing the traditional red-and-black runner’s attire, Nukuri-Johnson won her first Bay to Breakers, presented by Craigslist, by zipping through the 12-kilometer course in 40:12, topping her second-place finish in last year’s race. Academy of Art is molding a track power

Academy of Art University
As Briana Stewart tore up the track at James Logan High School in Union City, scholarship offers poured into her mailbox. The star hurdler received letters from top Division I programs, including Oregon, LSU and Kansas. But on decision day, she chose a school that had never participated in an NCAA track meet: Division II Academy of Art University. “I wanted a career that I’d actually be interested in for the rest of my life,” said Stewart, who fell in love with the school’s fashion merchandising program. Barnes is Warriors' bright side

Harrison Barnes
If there is a bright spot in the Warriors’ playoff series loss to the San Antonio Spurs, it was the emergence of Harrison Barnes as a legitimate go-to guy. With David Lee and Stephen Curry hobbled by injuries, the Warriors leaned on Barnes for offense throughout the series and he delivered until he left Game 6 with a headache. “He certainly has elevated his game,” coach Mark Jackson said. “I think the sky is the limit for him.” Read More

Warriors’ postseason run comes to end at the hands of Spurs

Golden State Warriors
The Warriors’ surprising season came to an end Thursday night, as they fell to the San Antonio Spurs 94-82 at Oracle Arena, losing their Western Conference semifinal series 4-2. Golden State’s offense disappeared during the previous two games of the series, and Game 6 was no different. The Warriors shot 38.8 percent as a team and turned the ball over 12 times. Stephen Curry was the only real highlight, scoring 22 points on 10-of-25 shooting, including 2-of-7 from behind the arc. Read More

Location of proposed new Warriors arena would be an eye-sore

Warriors arena
In 1975, I advocated that San Francisco build an indoor arena in the area where the Moscone Center is now. The arena would have accommodated the Warriors and an NHL team. A commission appointed to study the plan voted it down by a one-vote margin. So, the Warriors stayed in Oakland. The NHL team eventually wound up in San Jose, where it has thrived as the Sharks. Now, new Warriors owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber are proposing to build a grand new arena on the Embarcadero; Lacob has taken the reins on this project, as he has with the team. Read More

St. Ignatius baseball rolls in CCS opener behind Krook

During the West Catholic Athletic League season, the St. Ignatius baseball team failed to come through in so many key hitting situations that its confidence plummeted almost to the point of no return. Almost. On Thursday, the No. 14-seed Wildcats showed they still had plenty of moxie in them in an impressive 11-3 win over No. 3 Saratoga (22-9) in the opening round of the Central Coast Section Division II playoffs. St. Ignatius (16-12) plays No. 11 Soledad (24-4) in a quarterfinal on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Washington Park in Santa Clara. Read More

Punter Chris Kluwe, wide receiver Josh Cribbs and quarterback Matt McGloin have landed in Oakland. Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie announced the Cribbs and McGloin signings on Thursday, while Kluwe took to Twitter to say he’ll be wearing the silver and black. “I’m excited to be an Oakland Raider and be playing in California,” said Kluwe, who went to UCLA. “Now, my family can actually come to games.
