We need to celebrate small business

Small businesses are key to the economic health of San Francisco, California and our nation. Their entrepreneurship fuels the innovation economy. Their agility spurs creativity across industries. And their uniqueness truly shapes the character of our communities. San Francisco is fortunate to have so many small businesses. These employers provide jobs to 283,000 people, approximately half of San Francisco’s entire workforce. No matter how you measure it, these businesses, with less than 100 employees, are the backbone of the local economy. Read More

Coastal Commission should allow city’s plan for soccer fields to proceed

A recent report by staff members of the state agency that controls development along California’s coastline argues against a plan for new playing fields near the Beach Chalet in Golden Gate Park. But the document is flawed in its reasoning and its recommendations should be rejected. When the California Coastal Commission takes up the issue of the Beach Chalet soccer fields during its Thursday meeting, the members of the agency will have before them a document based on a false understanding of what this portion of the park was, is and should be. Invest in future: Hire youths for summer

summer jobs
As summer rolls around, I am challenging employers throughout San Francisco to participate in the second annual Summer Youth Jobs+ program. Last summer, we rose to President Barack Obama’s challenge to create jobs for our youths, and the results were unprecedented public, private and nonprofit partnerships that successfully placed more than 5,200 young people in jobs and training opportunities, including large numbers from our city’s disadvantaged and low-income communities. Lobbying reform proposal would be good for San Francisco

San Francisco government is known for nothing if not its vigorous public hearings, a process in which the comments and input of citizens are heartily solicited — at times to the chagrin of some people. When issues provoke a hearing in The City, there are clear protocols for openness, public notice and the like. Read More
