The nation faces a crushing burden of debt and is on course for an economic disaster without dramatic action to wrestle the budget deficit under control, House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan said Tuesday in the Republican response to President Barack Obama's State of the Union address.
And such spending cuts must start immediately as the price of getting GOP conservatives to cast a painful vote to increase the government's ability to borrow to pay its bills this spring, Ryan said.

A gunman opened fire inside a Detroit police precinct on Sunday, wounding four officers including a commander before he was shot and killed by police, authorities said.The gunman walked in through the precinct's revolving door shortly after 4 p.m. and opened fire indescriminantly at officers, police said. The officers fired back, killing the gunman."Utter chaos and pandemonium took place," Police Chief Ralph Godbee said at a news conference. "We have a number of officers who are shaken up."

Gabrielle Giffords on Thursday felt the sunshine on her face for the first time since the shooting, as doctors prepared her to leave behind the Arizona hospital where she dazzled them with her rapid recovery.Her next stop will be a Houston rehab center, where she will face an even more arduous task: Getting life back to normal.Her husband said he's hoping she'll make a full recovery, calling her "a fighter like nobody else that I know."The doctors who will help her offered a more sober outlook.

An IranAir passenger plane crashed Sunday night in the country's northwest, and around half of the 95 people on board survived with light injuries, Iranian media reported.The Boeing-727 operated by Iran's national airline crashed shortly before it was to land in the city of Orumiyeh, 460 miles (700 kilometers) northwest of the capital, Tehran, said Abbas Mosayebi, spokesman of the Iranian civil aviation organization, state TV reported.

Doctors treating wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords provided an optimistic update Sunday about her chances for survival, saying they are "very, very encouraged" by her ability to respond to simple commands along with their success in controlling her bleeding.Surgeons said a bullet went through Giffords' head on the left side of the brain, but she is still able to respond to commands such as squeezing a hand or showing two fingers. They credited several reasons for her survival, including good luck and the fact that paramedics got her to surgeons quickly — in under 40 minutes.

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona was shot in the head Saturday when an assailant opened fire outside a grocery store during a meeting with constituents, killing at least five people and wounding several others in a rampage that rattled the nation.
Giffords was among at least 10 people wounded, and the hospital said her outlook was "optimistic" and that she was responding to commands from doctors despite having a bullet go through her head. The hospital said a 9-year-old child was among the dead, and a U.S. Marshal said a federal judge was also fatally shot in the attack.
