Lineup of wines at Giants games a home run

AT&T Park
Sure, you can get hot dogs — veggie as well as meat — and if you’re a beer drinker, you have your pick of brews that include Bud and Blue Moon. You also have a choice of many ethnic foods, a farmers market and quality wines. If you think I’m talking about the Ferry Building, think again: This is AT&T Park, where wine is analyzed almost as much as the Giants’ chances of winning back-to-back World Series titles. Portuguese whites beyond vinho verde

The only Portuguese white wine that has any name recognition is vinho verde, which actually means green wine. Many are fine to drink if you make sure the bottle is good and cold. Some are on par with their Albariño siblings on the other side of the border. The big story, though, is that Portugal is starting to show that it is capable of making superb white wines from many of its regions. Read More

Four options for a terrific Mother’s Day meal

Next to Christmas, Mother’s Day is the biggest retail bonanza of the year, a $14 billion industry according to the National Retail Federation, a group that has done its research on the consuming preferences of moms.  Guess again if you thought mom wants a day at home with the family — 73 percent of moms like to dine out. Pass on the white carnations and start speed dialing for a reservation right now. You might have to beg. Here are some places I always like to be taken. They all serve both brunch and dinner on Mother’s Day, which is coming up quickly, on May 8. Read More

Saddle up at Colibri for ‘true’ tequila on Cinco de Mayo

Jared Hirsch of Colibri
Located across the street from the American Conservatory Theater in the heart of the theater district, Colibri is immensely popular before and after shows, and with tourists visiting Union Square. Since it opened in 2004 as a high-end central Mexican bistro in the former California Pizza Kitchen space, it has also attracted a strong following among locals. They come for the inventive cuisine and the enormous selection of tequila. Appropriately, bartender and event designer Jared Hirsch is a former actor who has spent much of his life in theater, including at ACT. Read More

Le Central is a San Francisco institution

Dave Gabine, Le Central
Some bars in San Francisco are institutions because of their venerable locations. Others became required stops for their signature concoctions. Le Central is famous not so much for having been around since 1974 or any particular cocktail. Rather, this Financial District restaurant and bar is part of San Francisco’s lore as a result of its familiar faces and personalities, and its untouched decor and French-bistro mystique. Read More

Many factors go into pricing a glass of wine

I went to a restaurant in Pacific Heights recently, ordered an $18 glass of wine and even though it was a Burgundy, I felt that the pour was a little stingy.Sure, the rent is probably outrageous, but I still could not help but feel like the reason for the high price was the neighborhood and a feeling that people will pay more on Union Street than on Valencia Street. I relayed this experience to a friend who shook her head and responded, “Sometimes I feel like I’m renting space in a restaurant.” Read More

New SFO fare soars over most airport food

Acme bread and Cowgirl Creamery counter
Airport life in America changed radically after 9/11. How fondly I remember breezing to the departure gate 15 minutes before takeoff with a carry-on heavy with wine, hair products, a picnic and a pocket knife. Now the whole process is fraught with anxiety, boredom and humiliation. Passengers must arrive hours before their flights, take off their shoes and outer clothing, submit to patdowns by strangers wearing rubber gloves and allow their belongings to be rifled through.Once inside the secure zone, passengers remain in custody until they walk off their flight. Take in the Bay with a cocktail in hand at Lafitte

Lafitte bar manager Ken Gray
The newest addition to the growing number of waterfront restaurants lining The Embarcadero is Lafitte, a wonderfully light-filled, open and airy space located a few blocks up from the Ferry Building. Chef-owner Russell Jackson named his “modern French brasserie” after the 18th-century French pirate whose take-no-prisoners approach to life he admires. The historically designated building dates from 1918 and has a true Bay-side feel: Sitting at the bar, one can literally spit into the Bay through one of the large, open windows lining the walls. Provence will change your perception of rosé

Provence’s prize
When Peter Mayle’s book “A Year in Provence” came out, it was like the New World had been discovered all over again. Tomatoes, olives, olive oil and rosé were served at nearly every dinner party I attended for the next five years. Read More
