Stanford, Cal softball teams eliminated from postseason

The Stanford and Cal softball teams have both have their fair share of success on the national stage over the years. But this season, neither will be playing in a super regional. Stanford fell 10-5 to Nebraska in the Lincoln Regional on Sunday, while Cal dropped a 3-1 game to host Michigan in the Ann Arbor Regional, ending both schools’ season. After dominating the Academic Athletic Association season, the Cardinals entered the San Francisco Section playoffs as the prohibitive favorite to win a third consecutive championship. On Tuesday, Lowell did just that, rolling to an 11-1, mercy-rule victory over Washington in five innings at San Francisco State University. The most dominant boys’ tennis program in the history of the San Francisco Section proved its mettle once again in Thursday’s Academic Athletic Association tournament championship match at Golden Gate Park. Lowell High School delivered another impressive performance in a 5-2 win over Lincoln, and it wasn’t even that close. Mission softball wins wild one, will meet Lowell next

For the Mission High School softball team, Tuesday’s game against Lincoln in the quarterfinals of the San Francisco Section-Academic Athletic Association playoffs was its de facto championship. The Bears certainly played like everything was on the line, rallying from five runs down on two occasions to score a wild 15-14 win at Lang Field. Mission (9-11) next faces Lowell in the semifinals on Thursday, while Balboa plays Washington in the other semifinal. Read More

Former SHC coach John Lee hired as new Riordan football coach

It didn’t take long for John Lee to land back on his feet. Lee, who was fired from Sacred Heart Cathedral — his alma mater — on Jan. 10, was announced as Riordan’s new football coach on Monday. “Christmas did come early,” Lee said in a phone conversation with The Examiner on Monday. “After I was let go, I thought I’d take a year or two off, and see what happens.
