While many will have Monday off to celebrate the birth of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., 16 area girls’ basketball teams will gather at Pacifica’s Terra Nova High School for a one-day, eight-game extravaganza.
The Tigers will be hosting the fourth annual Martin Luther King Game Day event for the second straight year and will draw the 6 p.m. game against Palo Alto. Tigers coach Kareem Summerville is looking forward to hosting the showcase once again.
“It should be a great shootout,” Summerville said. “The teams are matched up pretty evenly.”

Sacred Heart Cathedral goalkeeper Connor Anderson did everything he could to hold off Archbishop Mitty for the first 70 minutes of Saturday’s West Catholic Athletic League matchup, but it was an unfortunate rebound on his ninth save of the game that allowed the Monarchs to break through.
The sophomore dove to his left to stop a header from Mitty’s Zachary Downey, but he could not corral the rebound. The loose ball bounced out to the front of the net, where junior Brian Babcock blasted in the first score of the game.

After blowing a 22-point second-quarter lead, visiting Washington High School escaped with a 77-70 Academic Athletic Association overtime road win over Marshall on Thursday.
The Eagles (11-7, 3-0) carried a 47-29 lead into the half and withstood a second-half rally by the Phoenix (7-9, 2-2) in front of a standing-room-only crowd.
Washington pulled off the win, but at the end of regulation the Phoenix looked to be keyed for the upset.

Call it the luck of the Irish or the result of a coach getting his team to focus on each game at hand. Whatever the reason, the San Mateo High School girls’ soccer team is on a roll through the Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division.The Bearcats, last year’s PAL Ocean Division champs, used a generous carom off an upright and defeated Aragon 1-0 at San Mateo High on Thursday.

With an opportunity to secure second place outright in the West Catholic Athletic League, it was a series of several missed opportunities that the St. Ignatius boys’ soccer team will look back on with some regret after a 0-0 tie against visiting Serra on Wednesday.
St. Ignatius (8-1-2, 4-1-1) sent seven shots on target, but it was the shots that just missed the net that were the Wildcats’ best chances to score, including multiple right on the doorstep of the Serra goal.

Last year, the Westmoor High School boys’ basketball team finished second to Half Moon Bay in the Peninsula Athletic League Lake Division. As the Rams prepare for this year’s league opener, they know three things for certain.
First, Half Moon Bay is no longer in the Lake Division. Second, of the players that returned this year, very few have any varsity experience. Third, Capuchino is still in the same division with Westmoor and will likely be the Rams’ toughest competition.

The St. Ignatius boys’ basketball team’s heart-stopping 42-40 win over rival Sacred Heart Cathedral gives the Wildcats ownership of the Bruce-Mahoney Trophy for the second consecutive year, but the game may be remembered more for the points left on the floor.
The Fightin’ Irish shot 3-of-11 from the free-throw line, including five key misses in the fourth quarter, in the loss on Tuesday at USF’s War Memorial Gymnasium.

Playing its rival in front of a packed house at USF’s War Memorial Gymnasium, St. Ignatius left no doubt who the best girls’ high school basketball team in San Francisco is.
After a slow first quarter, the Wildcats (13-2, 3-0) broke the game open in the second quarter en route to blowing out Sacred Heart Cathedral 58-29 on Tuesday.
Maria Kemiji-McDonald led St. Ignatius with a game-high 16 points, but the story of the game was the Wildcats’ defense, as it forced Sacred Heart Cathedral (8-5, 1-1) into 27 turnovers.

After a strong Academic Athletic Association (AAA) season opener win against International Studies Academy on Wednesday, the Lowell girls’ basketball team (2-0) was able to stay undefeated in it’s early season with a 52-35 victory over the Galileo Lions on Friday.
At the end of the first quarter, Galileo led with a score of 11-4. Lowell rebounded and refocused and regained control by the midway through the third quarter.

The Carlmont High School boys’ basketball team is looking like the team to beat this year. Unfortunately for the Scots, they are playing in a league full of teams to beat.
“It’s a division [where] all six teams are going to be good this year,” Carlmont coach Dave Low said. “I can easily see the first-place team finishing with two or three losses.”
