Lick-Wilmerding rides key blocks to upset win over Marin Academy

Lick-Wilmerding High School knocked off first-place Marin Academy 40-36 in Bay Counties League West play Thursday. After trailing 31-30 heading into the fourth quarter, Lick (12-11, 3-4) took the lead back in the fourth and blocked shots by juniors P.J. Stone and Isaiah Boone with less than a minute remaining helped keep the Tigers ahead for good. Read More

Trio of city’s top football players sign on to play at the next level

While The City lacks the punch of star power that flooded other cities across the country on National Signing Day, three football recruits from San Francisco still made commitments to play collegiately on Wednesday. While not at the peak of football, two Sacred Heart Cathedral players and a single St. Ignatius player signed letters of intent to NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision schools (formerly Division I-AA). Aggressive Hillsdale team hitting its stride

When Andy Hodzic was called upon to take over the Hillsdale High School boys’ soccer team four years ago, he found a talented but undisciplined team. “Before I came here, every game there was at least one red card and players were fighting,” Hodzic recalled. “But once we got them settled down, they started playing better and winning games.” The Knights went 1-9 in Peninsula Athletic League Ocean play last year as Hillsdale lost nearly two dozen players to eligibility issues forcing Hodzic to put a uniform on anyone willing to step out onto the pitch. Jefferson making waves in PAL’s Ocean Division

When the Peninsula Athletic League Ocean Division boys’ basketball schedule kicked off, there was only one thing known for certain. It was going to be anybody’s title to win. With Wednesday’s games marking the halfway point of the season, there was certainly no surprise as to who was sitting on top. But even Jefferson High School coach Nick Paras was surprised at the Indians’ record. “We expected to be a tough team to play,” Paras said. “But we never expected to start 4-0 in this league.” Read More

Jay keeps Lick in game long enough for late surge

In the first half of Lick-Wilmerding’s nonleague game against Bay School in the Bay Area Conference Challenge on Saturday at Head-Royce School, the Tigers were ice-cold, except for one player. While the rest of the Tigers shot 1-for-14 from the floor in the half, senior guard Kishan Jay buoyed the offense with 12 of the team’s 14 points in the half, to keep Lick close enough to rally back from a 19-14 halftime deficit in a 47-41 win. Sacred Heart junior will take skills to Cal

After scoring six goals in West Catholic Athletic League play last season, good enough for second in the league, Celeste Boureille raised some eyebrows as a sophomore. But the Sacred Heart Cathedral forward won’t be flying under anyone’s radar anymore, as she recently verbally committed to play collegiate soccer at Cal, amid a breakout junior season. Read More

Five members of Menlo’s title team moving on to Division I schools

For most high school water polo coaches, having one player recruited to play for a prestigious university out of a single graduating class is a memorable accomplishment. Having five out for an entire career is just as noteworthy. But five or more from a single graduating class is bordering on the edge of unbelievable. Yet, that is exactly what Menlo School boys’ coach Jack Bowen has done this year as five seniors from the team have officially committed to Division I programs in the fall. Read More

Controversial ruling leads to scoreless tie for Burlingame, Woodside

On a frigid Tuesday night, two of the top contenders in the Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division girls’ soccer race squared off in a game that was dominated by defense. With only a total of seven shots on goal between Woodside and Burlingame High School, it seemed a 0-0 draw would be the only fitting outcome, and that is exactly how it ended up. With the first shot of the match coming 30 minutes in, it was apparent that both teams had figured out their defensive strategies early on. Read More

Edelman has Menlo flying high

The climb to the top of the West Bay Athletic League’s Foothill Division in girls’ basketball is a long, arduous path for any of the league’s six teams. Having a 6-foot-3 center to dominate the paint is one way to make the trek a little bit easier. Menlo School has that advantage in sophomore Drew Edelman — no relation to New England Patriots wide receiver and former Woodside High and College of San Mateo standout Julian Edelman — and the Knights are looking to capitalize on it every time they hit the court.
