Late surge pushes Team City to victory

After trailing late in the inaugural SanFranPreps.com City All-Star Game, Team City scored 14 runs in the final three innings, including a seven-run sixth, to beat Team SF 15-3 at USF’s Benedetti Diamond on Sunday. “It’s definitely fun to watch,” Team City and Burton coach Mike Abbott said. “These kids are all really talented. Menlo star to miss U.S. Open qualifier with injury

Despite qualifying for the 2012 U.S. Open sectional qualifier at TPC Harding Park and Lake Merced weeks ago, Andrew Buchanan, the 17-year-old golfing prospect from Menlo School, won’t be teeing it up come Monday. Buchanan, who won the Central Coast Section boys’ golf title this month, injured his right elbow during a pickup basketball game at a friend’s graduation party Sunday night. “It’s really a healing process from a bruise,” said Dave Buchanan, Andrew’s father and golf coach at Menlo. “But he’s stiff and it’ll take a couple weeks to get back.” Read More

Peninsula’s top track stars eye state glory

Ten performers from San Mateo County will be making the trip to Clovis for the 94th annual California Interscholastic Federation State Track and Field Championships, set to begin Friday. Serra, the only county school to send more than one participant, will have double the opportunity to do damage at state with both of its participants competing in the boys’ shot put. Jonathan Beering and Luke Longinotti have been nothing if not consistent. St. Ignatius baseball team advances to title game following rout of Leland

SAN JOSE — The Leland High School baseball team upset top-seeded Willow Glen in the quarterfinal round of the Central Coast Section Division II playoffs, but may have run into the division’s best team, despite seed, in the semifinals Thursday at Municipal Stadium. Fifth-seeded St. Ignatius scored six runs in the first inning, three runs in the second and closed the game out in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI double from Nick Johnson that sealed the 10-0 mercy-rule win over the eighth-seeded Chargers. Buchanan settles for 23rd at NorCal

Menlo School’s Andrew Buchanan came up short in his bid to reach the state championships, finishing in a tie for 23rd at the NorCal Golf Championships at the Butte Creek Country Club in Chico on Monday. Armijo’s (Fairfield) Aaron Beverly won a playoff to take the individual crown after shooting a 4-under-par 68, while Foothill (Pleasanton) took the team title. Read More

It was only a year ago that the Scots had their season ended in the Central Coast Section Division I semifinals by San Benito. SI’s Domingo commits to play at Georgetown

St. Ignatius junior Stephen Domingo ended the drama of a nearly three-year recruiting process on Monday, verbally committing to Georgetown a full year before his scheduled graduation from high school. Domingo, a 6-foot-7 wing and three-year varsity player, led the Wildcats in scoring (13.3 points per game) and rebounding (five per game) in his junior season. Read More

Hau lifts Washington to Transbay Series title

The Washington High School baseball team found itself in the same position this time last year. It had won the opener of the Transbay Series against Oakland Tech and went into the second game with a chance to claim its first Transbay title since 2006.
