Seven miles of trails snake through San Francisco streets and open space, offering plenty of unobstructed views of the Bay and ocean. Not all portions of the Bay Area Ridge Trail through The City, though, accomplish this goal.
The area along Aquavista Way, on the west side of Twin Peaks, doesn’t offer sights that live up to its name. It is an oversight the Bay Area Ridge Trail Council is working to change.

A woman bit a thief on the nose and won her cell phone back during a failed robbery attempt in North Beach Monday, police said.
The nose bite, which drew blood, helped convince two crooks to halt their attack at Kearny and Columbus streets around 10:25 p.m.
One of two crooks snatched the woman’s cell phone on the 8X Muni bus, then dashed off the bus. The victim chased the suspect onto the street and grappled for her phone, only to have the second thug come from behind and strike her in the head with either a fist or a hard object, police said.

DNA evidence in a 13-year-old rape case led to an arrest in Daly City on Thursday.
Willis Dismuke Murray, 30, allegedly yanked a woman off a sidewalk in Concord late at night on March 18, 1997, and raped her, police said.
In June of this year, the Contra Costa County crime lab told cops that Murray’s DNA matched evidence collected from the crime scene. Cops detained him as he exited a Daly City home Thursday, police said.

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a man Monday morning who had been stranded on an island near the mouth of the San Joaquin and Sacramento river deltas for five days, the Coast Guard said.
The man, 54, started his inflatable raft in the Sacramento River on Wednesday and drifted downriver until his raft began to sink near Roe Island, the Coast Guard said.
He was able to communicate with his family via cell phone, but didn't know which island he was on.

State bond money and savings from capital projects should provide Muni with the $137 million the agency needs to complete its financial plan for the Central Subway project, but the funding strategy could come at the expense of other future programs.
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, which operates Muni, has identified $869 million in planned federal funding to support its Central Subway plan, but to secure that money, it needs to come up with a game plan for its local match by February.

On Thursday, Rep. Jackie Speier, D-San Mateo/San Francisco, introduced a bill that would make tax-exempt any compensation given to San Bruno victims from PG&E.
The utility has pledged a $100 million relief fund for victims of the San Bruno blast, including “no-strings-attached” checks of up to $50,000.
The bill, the San Bruno Victims Compensation Fairness Act, also would make nontaxable any gains residents receive from insurance payments or other compensation for their destroyed property.

San Bruno residents who lost their homes in the devastating natural-gas line explosion in September should be able to rebuild their homes as they originally appeared, even if it conflicts with current regulations, city officials said this week.
One Tuesday, the city council is expected to approve an expedited planning process for victims of the Sept. 9 blast, which killed eight people, destroyed 35 homes and caused major damage to 20 other properties.

A pill-popping Redwood City mom who stole from a purse that was inside her child’s elementary school classroom is headed to prison and rehab. Lisa Marie Mathews, 33, was sentenced to a year in county jail and three years probation Wednesday for committing a series of thefts earlier this year to support a raging drug habit, San Mateo County prosecutors said.
