Nine Venezuelans, including five with the Giants, will feature in the series starting tonight — the most ever.

Anyone previously doubting the existence of the oft-referenced “baseball gods” had no choice but to stop doubting as a magical Monday night unfolded on the shores of McCovey Cove.
They had to become full-on converts, so steadfast in their awe of such gods that the only logical response was to craft a sandwich board to wear on Market Street and bray at any and all passers-by: “I BELIEVE!!!”

Marco Scutaro could have taken a day off after being plowed through by St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday in Game 2 of the NL Championship Series. Instead he put on a show at the plate for the rest of the series on his way to NLCS MVP honors.

Freddy Sanchez, who hasn’t played all year, has been helping out during pregame warmups, and Will Clark and J.T. Snow have both been mainstays around AT&T Park all season. In a postseason full of twists and turns, the San Francisco Giants are headed back to the World Series after a big comeback against the defending champs.
Hunter Pence got the Giants going with a weird double, Matt Cain pitched his second clincher of October and San Francisco closed out Game 7 of the NL championship series in a driving rainstorm, routing the St. Louis Cardinals 9-0 Monday night.
San Francisco won its record-tying sixth elimination game of the postseason, completing a lopsided rally from a 3-1 deficit.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy joined in the budding tradition of pregame speeches before Game 5 in St. Louis, which up until that point had been handled by Hunter Pence. The manager said he wasn’t trying to step on the outfielder’s toes, however.
“I really was trying to tee it up for Hunter and let him go, more than anything,” Bochy said. “I just felt like I should say something there before Hunter did because these guys, I couldn’t be prouder of how they’re going out there every day and fighting, and that’s what the game is about.”
